Research Memoranda
Telecom services, bundles and channels
ImageThe Dutch telecom market changed significantly over the past years. The crash in the early 2000's seems to be forgotten and in the past couple of years a series of major mergers and acquisitions among Telecom operators has taken place. Convergence of the telecom and IT industry is one of the reasons for this consolidation to happen. The coming together of telecom and IT services also made new competitors enter the telecom industry. In addition, government regulation and fast technological innovations made this relatively competitive industry hard to survive. All parties in the industry need to re-evaluate their market positions. New business models and propositions for telecom operators
are to be considered.

Smart Metering in the Dutch Energy Sector
Resaerch Memorandum: Smart Metering in the Dutch Energy SectorThe Dutch energy sector is currently experiencing a wide variety of changes. In the stepwise process of liberalisation and deregulation of the market, ownership unbundling of the regional energy grids is the most recent development. The adoption of the Wet Onafhankelijk Netbeheer (WON) has some far reaching implications, since it obliges incumbent, integrated energy firms to dispose of the regional networks and transform them into fully functioning and autonomous network companies. On top of the unbundling of the regional grids a new market model is introduced, redefining the responsibilities of actors in the sector and thereby also creating a drive for reorganisation of the metering process. In this dynamic and uncertain setting the introduction of smart meters poses unique challenges for the sector, whereby new opportunities arise, but complications are lurking.

Organizational Best Practices in Pan European Corporations
Research Memorandum: Organizational Best Practices in Pan European CorporationsThe global market place is changing at an ever increasing pace due to globalization, technology developments, energy and material scarcity, mounting environmental problems and the like. In addition, Europe imposes specific issues like the ongoing development of the unified market (EU), liberalization/deregulation of national industries, unique demographics (dozens of languages, a shrinking population) and significant cultural differences between the various countries.

Telecom Platform Introductions
Research Memorandum: Telecom Platform IntroductionsIntroductions of products and underlying platforms have the prime attention of telecom operators in an increasingly competitive market. Platform introductions are the most complex as they generally impact the end-to-end technology infrastructure and also existing organisation, business processes and product portfolios. A traditional approach to programme management does not suffice in such a setting, as it is too much detached from the line organisation.

Collaborative Growth
Research Memorandum: Collaborative GrowthAccording to the Growth Letter of the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, the growth of the Dutch economy suffers a structural slowdown. The global economy however performs on average quite well with an annual growth rate of around 3%. In order to maintain the level of welfare in the Dutch economy, a growth rate of around 3% of the economy is needed. This necessary growth has to be achieved through the effort and performance of firms, facilitated by various infrastructures provided by the government (although some infrastructures the government does not need to operate itself). Growth of an economy is a collective effort and achievement between entrepreneurs, government and the non-profit sector.

The changing role of the CIO
Research Memorandum: The changing role of the CIOOver the past decades, information management has moved from the wings to center stage. The number of Chief Information Officers (CIO's) has increased dramatically over the last years. Now that IT is increasingly accepted and integrated into most businesses, the question has been raised whether the role of the CIO will change.

Electronic commerce, Changing the rules of competition
Research Memorandum: Electronic commerce, Changing the rules of competitionSince electronic commerce or e-Commerce fundamentally redefines economic structure, it is not something to leave to CIO's only. Assessing the potential impact e-Commerce has on the company's markets clearly calls for top management attention. Basically, companies have three strategic options: operating both in the physical world and on the Internet, concentrate entirely on the physical operation or transform into an information broker.

IT Governance and Management
Research Memorandum: IT Governance and ManagementIt has become a major factor in the business of most companies. Nevertheless, incorporating the governance and management of IT into the company's organization is found to be difficult. This report contains an analysis of the information technology (IT) governance and management practices of large companies.

Governing IT Sourcing
Research Memorandum: Governing IT sourcingThis research report presents the results of an exploratory investigation of how companies may govern IT Sourcing effectively. It contains in-depth case studies of two major blue chip companies that engage in complex IT Sourcing. The report features an insightful model of the IT Function that distinguishes four core IS Tasks. Based on these core IS Tasks, the two cases were first analyzed individually followed by a cross-case comparison.

The strategist stands still
Research Memorandum: The strategist stands still The consulting industry went through a major disruption in 2001-2003, due to the sudden economic downturn. “The strategy-consulting industry is wasting away. Is there a cure?” headed The Economist in 2002. And Fortune remarked in 2003: The length of an average strategy-consulting engagement has dropped from six to 18 months in the mid 90s to just 90 days today. The question is whether the way the strategy consulting-industry functions remains unchanged when the economy revives, or if structural changes can be identified.
