Robert Hagendoorn - Former COO Royal KPN

KPNKPN is the leading Dutch telecommunications company active in fixed and mobile communications, with over 29.000 employees and a turnover of EUR 12 billion.

Situation

My tenure as a COO at Royal KPN Netherlands ran from 1999 to the end of 2001. Turbulent times first started with the rise of the Internet age, the increasing fixed-mobile cannibalisation and subsequently 9/11 and the bursting of the internet bubble. As COO it was my responsibility to implement a dramatic change in the organisation to realise the overall strategy and align the organisation structure, staffing, processes and IT systems accordingly. This was not a small challenge in an organisation with more than 29.000 employees and over 1000 IT systems. A challenge for which I needed a competent and trusted partner that could assist me and my staff in covering an enormous amount of ground in a very short time period.

Why Nolan, Norton & Co.?

They understand business and they understand organisations. They approach issues from an integral viewpoint, grounded in thorough knowledge of organisational design, governance and operations.

My Experience?

Their teams consist of bright, young consultants with a truly exceptional work ethic. They deliver results in an incredibly short time period. They provide you with a sound analysis of the issues at hand and come up with pragmatic, implementable solutions. I see them as a team of lumber jacks, in the positive sense of the word, that have a real impact on your organisation and get things done! Their Partners are also very much involved in the assignments, which allows you to benefit from both the drive of the younger consultants and the experience of their senior staff. And what I find very important is that they work with you, not just for you, which is a big difference to some other well known strategy consultants.
